Well the rust was mainly limited to the tucked in edge of the wheel arches and doesn't look to be affecting any of the quarter panel. As minor as it is it certainly has raised some doubts in my mind but I won't back out completely just yet. The dealer wants to do some standard maintenance, put new tires on, and try to fix/prevent the rust as much as they can without replacing metal. I told them I would think about it after they get done with the car, I'll still probably take it to get a PPI and additionally a body shop to get their thoughts.

Really wish I just stumbled upon a mint 73,000 mile 2003 M3 but that would be ridiculous right?

EDIT: It looks like the previous owner neglected it more than abused it which is a shame.

Just search the classifieds on the big BMW forums.

I don't think I'll ever buy a car any other way again. All of them are well maintained and owned by enthusiasts so you know they are taken care of.

Have you tried going through BMW CCA?

As much as I'd like to I really don't have time to slave through endless pages on forums searching for the car that I'm looking for. I wish the classified sections worked more like an autotrader, at least give the option to set a search distance (like how I'm looking at cars within 100 miles).

Oh you're not looking to ship.

Yeah don't look on the forums you'll just get sad about not having such nice cars for sale near by.

All the cars I like are either too far away or SMG, and this guy wants a third pedal that isn't dead!

It's been traded between like 3 people in my area, for some reason no one keeps it. If I bought this thing I'd never sell it. I'd drive it to the ground and when the S54 gives up I'd put an LS in it.

Give me your requirements and I can find an E46 for you. I spend way too much time looking at them for someone who isn't completely planning on buying one haha

Personally just cause I'm sick of LS swaps and like to keep things in the family I'd go for the 335is's N54 or E90/2 M3's S65.

Once that gets figured out in this chassis and is DIY'able count me in. I know people tried putting M54's into E30's and the level of involvement compared to the M52/M50 is very very very high.

All I need is a hammer.

I did an S52 turbo into my E30 with a hammer.

Too be fair it was a ball peen hammer.

I would pass on that one. There's still plenty of E46 M3s that are fair weather cars. Don't be afraid to fly to go get one.

rust? on an E46? but it's not even old!

I must admit, I'm a bit spoiled living on the west coast...

Yeah flying to get a car isn't really in my budget since this is really my stretch car, like I said earlier I am willing to still get the PPI and have a body shop take a look.
